The role:

This role leads a team of direct reports, but also plays a key leadership role across the department. Within your team, you’ll oversee production and distribution of monthly print editions of Whitehorse News, and lead the planning of many diverse engagement and communications campaigns. You’ll coordinate timely and sound responses to media enquiries, and keep an eye out to ensure our advocacy positions are aligned with our comms and marketing.

You’ll also foster and encourage collaborative business partnerships within internal clients, and ensure you promote the expertise and value of the department’s services and promote trust.

About you:

You’ll have excellent writing skills and sound judgment, with plenty of experience so you keep your cool on the days when nothing goes to plan. You’ll be polished and professional, to provide strong support to the Mayor, Councillors and Executive team, and sound advice to the department head.

You’ll have excellent organisational skills, to keep an eye on a wide range of projects and campaigns on track, but you’ll have a great team of direct reports and strong support from above. You’ll have demonstrated experience in leading a team with high morale and a culture of excellence. Candidates who speak Chinese, Vietnamese or Greek are encouraged to apply. Candidates with diverse abilities and backgrounds are very welcome. We understand that diverse experiences and perspectives make our teams richer and more capable.

About the department:

Our department includes three main teams of Strategic Communications, Marketing & Brand, and Customer Service. Strategic Communications and Marketing & Brand work almost seamlessly together on campaigns and engagements, so leadership is shared across both teams. We strive for a pretty consistent flow of information between Customer Service and the other teams, so that everyone has their finger on the pulse and can respond to emerging issues. We’re always trying to promote a customer-centric approach across Council, so our teams join forces to tackle tricky problems, and give each other the heads up on new issues. We have a corps of around 10 leaders across the department who are involved in planning, projects, mentoring and strategy. They don’t all have direct staff reports, but can all play a role in steering us in the right direction. This role is expected to help facilitate the development, cooperation and effectiveness of this group of leaders.
